Jesus and Your Temptation

A Sermon Based on Matthew 4:1-11

There are four temptations in Matthew 4. What are they? The first three are apparent even if they do need some explanation. This sermon moves through this Scripture sequentially expositing each of the temptations. Along the way, Jesus shares his method of beating temptation, but, more, he shares that he has overcome temptation. The sermon closes with a look at how Jesus is our great champion in our failure.

Religion that Works to Bring Heaven to Earth

(A Sermon Based on James 3:17-4:10)

We all have an onboard belief system. We all are inherently religious even if we claim to be secular. What is that belief system? Me first. We believe that belief system so deeply that it’s raising up a little piece of hell in all of our lives. In every case it’s why we’re fighting. James calls to us in his most powerful part of his writing to turn us from that. And why? To bring heaven all the way to earth for each other just like Jesus did for us. Listen in.

Your Temptation and Mark

Your Temptation and Mark

(Mark 1:12-15)

There is a great irony when it comes to Mark's account of Jesus' temptation. The same time he talks about temptation, he creates one. You can see people falling under the weight of that temptation everywhere if you look carefully for it. What temptation is that? The temptation to believe that because Mark's message is short it's also small - to rush right past what he says. This sermon fights back against that temptation. It seeks to reveal the heart and core of Mark's short, but major message on Jesus' temptation.
