Psalm 110 is a titan of a Psalm. Of all the Psalms quoted in the New Testament, Psalm 110 is most quoted. But why? What is it about? This sermon walks the listener through the Psalm, showing that it brings us the perfect peace of Jesus.
Psalm 1 tells us how to make the journey that is our lives on earth. In doing that, it describes the blessed life. This sermon explains how the Psalm sets up life as a journey and then meditates on the ramifications of that for our lives.
After Paul opens his readers’ eyes to God’s mercy and grace, he directs their attention to a picture of authentic community. This is a community that might look unusual and backwards in the eyes of the world. But backwards isn’t bad. In fact, it can be lifesaving.
Isaiah hears the Lord’s voice go out from his throne: “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” God wants us to hear his voice, too. He wants us to think about that question and to respond in faith. Our sins have made us unworthy, but the good news of the gospel has made all the difference.
Psalm 139 is one of the greatest devotional works in the entire Old Testament. It's called a devotional work for a reason. It requires us to be devoted to it. There is so much inside of it that we must contemplate deeply. This sermon is devoted to this great Psalm and the God who breathed it into existence that we might know him.
Interestingly and ironically, the word meditation has come to connote specific bodily postures, soft music, and mental blankness. This connotation is the opposite of the word’s denotation, which is not the absence of mental activity, but its presence. This sermon is a meditation on the meditations that the Lord invites us to in this great Psalm. It rises to a meditation on the Lord being our rock and redeemer.
